Magnetic Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery
iron oxide nanoparticles
Funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation through the University of Nebraska's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center Program.
This project is a collaboration between our lab and Prof. Vinod Labhasetwar at the University of Nebraska Medical Center that utilizes expertise in magnetic nanomaterials and nanoparticle drug delivery mechanisms to address the diagnoses and treatment of pathologies such as cancer and restenosis. Our goal is to develop and test novel biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles that can assist in simultaneous imaging and targeting of drug delivery systems. The figure shows an iron oxide nanoparticle that has been functionalized with oleic acid and Pluronic polymer to incorporate hydrophobic drugs that can be released over time.
