One use for magnetic beads is for assays
-- determining what type and how many cells are present in a sample.
These usually are ex-vivo applications and use polymer microparticles
into which magnetic nanoparticles have been embedded. Magnetic signals can be used to increase the number of analytes that can be detected in a single assay.
This project is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is a collaboration led by the Biophysics group at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
